Altrusa International, Inc. of Pampa, Texas

Leaders in Service

For over 55 years, Pampa Altrusans have served our community in many ways.

Our current service projects include:

Tralee Crisis Center

Pampa Altrusans helped start this center for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse in 1984.  Altrusa continues to support the Center with monetary support, paper products, volunteers, and any other needs the Center may have.  At Christmas each year, we pick 2 angels from their angel tree and purchase gifts.

Schneider House Project

The Schneider House is a lower-income apartment building which Altrusa has adopted as a project.  Members purchase 4 large cans of Folgers Coffee every two months for the residents to enjoy drinking in the lobby.  We also furnish a supply closet with items such as liquid soap, bath soap, dishwashing soap and bath tissue where residents can get items when they run out or simply do not have the money to purchase them.  Recently Altrusa also purchased 35 toothbrushes, 25 toothpaste tubes and 4 boxes of denture cleaner for the residents.

During the Christmas holidays, a Christmas reception was held for the residents.  The club furnished cookies and punch and decorated for the occasion.  Altrusan Myrna Orr and Kent Lane provided music and everyone sang Christmas carols.

Children's Shopping Tour

Each year in December several organizations in Pampa go together to take lower income children shopping for Christmas gifts for their family.  (The children are surprised with a gift, also).  Altrusa has helped sign in volunteers, accompanied the children on their shopping trip, and helped wrap the over 1500 gifts that are bought that morning.

Meals on Wheels

Each Wednesday Altrusa members deliver Meals on Wheels to shut-ins at the Schneider House, a lower- income apartment building.  Altrusa members either go alone or in pairs which makes it easier to carry the meals.

Travis Elementary School Project

This group of Altrusans have discovered the cure for a hectic and busy day..... "Paws and Read" to the Travis Tigers Elementary kindergarten and first grade students on the first Tuesday of each month.  The school provides the books so Altrusans just get to enjoy the children as they open their minds to the endless opportunities that books can provide.  They will also be having an end-of-year party with healthy snacks, games, and books for everyone

Altrusans also assisted Travis Elementary School with their Veterans Day Program at M.K. Brown Auditorium.

Breast Cancer Awareness

For Breast Cancer Awareness, Altrusans set up a display at a local United Supermarket.  They presented information to women on the importance of having mammograms and clinical breast exams as well as doing self breast exams.  Altrusans distributed Cancer Awareness Snacks along with the information as a reminder.  An article about the event ran in our local newspaper.
Our committee developed a Proclamation signed by our mayor for "Think Pink Pampa Day" which was held on October 24th.  Citizens were encouraged to wear "pink" in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness, and it was advertised in the paper and on the radio.  Flyers were also distributed throughout Pampa.

At the first meeting in October, Altrusa members were also presented with pink ribbons for themselves and three friends, and they were asked to wear the ribbons daily for the month of October.

Make a Difference Day

  Dyslexia and Related Disorders

"Make a Difference Day" Altrusans in cooperation with the Pampa Independent School District presented a program to the community and surrounding areas about Dyslexia and Related Disorders.
Guest Speaker, Dr. Terri Zerfas, SMU School of Education Coordinator for the Learning Therapy Center, presented a wonderful program to educate parents and educators on Dyslexia and how parents and educators can assist students to succeed in the classroom.
The Make a Difference Day program was held in the AmeriInn in Pampa with over 150 people in attendance.

After the program there was a Q and A time and parents were able to complete an application for free testing for their child.
Six children will be tested the first of March.

Celebration of Lights

During the Christmas holidays, our city of Pampa has a Christmas Light Display in a local park, and organizations are asked to help by collecting donations at the end of the display and giving out candy canes.  Pampa Altrusans have participated in this project ever since it began in 1992 by selecting 2 nights in December to man the donation booth.
ABC Boxes/School Supplies

This year our Altrusa Club used our ABC Boxes to collect school supplies for underprivileged children.  Articles appeared in the local papers telling everyone where the boxes would be located.

A school supplies closet is also maintained at one of our Title One elementary schools for children who can not affort them.
